• I’m beating my head against a wall here for nearly a week trying to understand what kind of WordPress theme I actually need and how to go about laying it out.

I want to make an ESL learning website for free and paid members. I’m looking for a template that would allow me to add content for downloading, provide short written and video tutorials, and be able to set up live chat support for teaching.

I’ve looked over countless themes both elearning and education and they seem a bit overpowering for my needs. I’ve been looking at responsive templates and still I can’t see what I need.

I’d like a top menu that would allow a drop sub menu or list that I can add all the courses in one tab (a long, horizontal floating tab) which I’ve seen on some templates.

I’m not very experienced with web design and I am wondering if this would be a custom edit to an existing template or not.

If anyone knows what kind of template I could look over for teaching online, I’d be very grateful. I would really like a clean looking responsive template that’s easy to move around in and easy to customize for learning.

  • Finding the right theme can be difficult and time consuming. I know, I’ve had to do it. However, I don’t think you’re going to get a good answer from this forum since the “right” theme is quite dependent on the likes of the person looking for a theme.

I suggest you think about the absolute essential features for your theme and then search for themes that way (I suggest starting with the official WordPress theme repository as other sites may contain malicious software).

From what you’ve described of a drop-down menu there should be plenty that support that. Adding menus can be done from within WordPress so you may just need to explore that functionality in more depth. One trick with menus is that you can create a hierarchy by “moving” a menu item below and then to the right of the parent menu item.

Also, the built-in themes that come with WordPress have the functionality you’ve described. They might not look ideal to you, but the functionality is there for you to explore.

Lastly, if you find other teaching sites that you like you can check to see if they’re running WordPress and what theme they’re using by viewing the source in your browser. Look for /wp-content/themes/ in the source code to find the theme they’re using.

    Excellent tips, and much appreciated.

I’ve been spending the morning looking over learning management system templates as I am thinking this is where I need to go. As I mentioned before, I would like to offer students the ability to complete exercises such as writing essays, listening, and speaking. I’m not sure a regular template would allow me to do that without adding a few extra plugins. Then again, I am not sure if a LMS template would be over-kill for me. If anyone is familiar with ESL learning, it’s good to have a lot of different exercises and activities students can do, especially if I am going to be asking for a paid members fee.

I could build from a basic WP template, but I don’t have the knowledge for that. Give me an android phone to develop and I am as happy as a child in a toy store. Website designing is a bit more than I can chew at the moment.

Anyone have ideas about Learning Management Systems for WP?
