Need clarification about using wordpress for commercial websites

  • Hello,

    I would like to know if it is possible to use wordpress as a system for our commercial webdesign, what i mean is edit its code (removing some, adding some of ourselves), removing wordpress references etc, and sell websites based on the code

    i’ve read that we can do “services” as making websites for other peoples
    but i’m not sure if this is the same as we don’t leave any reference to it.. and basically claiming it to be our code

    WordPress is GPL, and while I would hesitantly say ‘Yes, yes you can’ I have two concerns.

    1) Get in touch with https://wordpressfoundation.org/ for the legalities.

    2) If you edit CORE CODE you will hate upgrading WordPress, or you will be generating a Fork.

    I would spend some time seeing if you can accomplish what you want with Plugins, which would keep you still okay in the GPL, and let you keep using WordPress regardless of upgrades.
