Nearest Store Location

I have a list of 82 stores and would like a default store to be displayed in the sidebar based on the users location. So, while they are visiting a product page, they can have the nearest store information right in the sidebar. (Maybe allow logged in users the ability to set a default store.)

I’m not afraid to get into the code, just need a starting point and how to implements such a feature.
