Navigation problems…

    I have installed and uninstalled WordPress about 5 times now. Due to my lack of knowledge I do not know how else to fix it…

    This is what’s happening:

    1. I install it through Fantastico.
    2. I make my .htaccess file writable (both 666 and 777)
    3. When changing my permalink structure it tells me it is not writable.
    4. I cut and paste the code that WP provides me with on the permalink page.

    The RESULT = Site navigation does not work. The only thing working on it is the ‘home’ link. The category links do not take me to the posts within that category…

    I had WP before at another host and this never came up… so I am confused about whether it is a WP issue, a hosting issue or a dumb user issue (that would be me by the way).

    Any input or help would be appreciated.
    Any suggestions?

  • First just to be sure, check with your host to see if they have mod_rewrite installed and usable/accessible for you.

    vakryl – I just posted a ticket at my host with that question… I will post the answer as soon as I get it.

    Yes, please do…. keep in mind that we’re all on different time zones though!

    It looks like the mod_rewrite is usable for me…
    Another option I was given was to install manually instead of through Fantastico. I will give that a shot and report back on progress.

    I installed WP manually.
    Updated to my desired permalink structure and voila – it still does not work.

    I am starting to think it might be my new host (ASO) since I do not have problems with other WP installation on another host.
    Any other ideas would be appreciated…

    Well, usually if they’ve told you mod_rewrite is available, it will be. Don’t know if they can do something else wonky….

    Short of asking them again if they can advise you how to make it work with their system, I don’t have any bright ideas, sorry….

    That doesn’t make any sense. I’m sure that there are a few users on ASO with properly-functioning WP blogs on add-on domains. It should function just fine. The add-on domains and sub-domains function as almost completely isolated entities, so the .htaccess files won’t be affected by any other’s. Is your .htaccess file in your WordPress root (the same directory as WordPress’s main index.php file)?

    You are right macmanx… I just figured it out a short while ago. I know I probably should have known this but the problem was the following:

    I needed an .htaccess file for each add-on domain… I created one and voila! It works.

    My apologies to all who contributed and tried to help out on something that seems as if it should have been relatively easy.

    I will classify this one as ‘resolved!’
