I am not tech-savvy — don’t know CSS or any coding at all. I’m using the Comic Press theme and the Comic Easel plug-in and neither the theme’s navigation bar or the plugin’s work for me.

I have three pages up for my webcomic, just as a test. They’re password protected right now so I can get help. The password is “support”. If I don’t hear from anyone on this forum in 3-7 days, I’ll assume this forum is kinda dead and I’ll make them private again.

When I have Disable Default Navigation unchecked, “First” will work on Page 3, “Last” will work on Page 1, and Next and Previous don’t even have links. Clicking on the comic image itself to go to the next page also doesn’t work. There’s no way to get to Page 2.

When I don’t use the default navigation menu and instead use the Comic Easel Widget or whatever it is, it’s the same issue.

The drop-down menu also doesn’t work — it just takes you to the same comic page that you’re on, essentially reloading it.

I don’t know if I screwed something up with permalinks or what; at one point I checked the option in either Comic Press or Comic Easel (it’s confusing jumping back and forth)) to have chapter numbers in the permalinks and then went to WP Settings -> Permalinks and hit SAVE, per the instructions, but that made things worse and caused 404s, so I undid that… I think. I don’t know.

ETA: “Previous” and “Next” are now magically working??? But I think I’m missing something with how to make the drop-down menu function correctly.

ETA 2: Now navigating by chapter will only take you to page 2 and not page 1?

Okay, it seems like the problem was that my chapters were screwed up. I have a “Season 1” parent chapter and then a “Season 1 Episode 1” child chapter. I needed to order Season 1 as “1”, Season 1 Episode 1″ as 2, put Page 2 and 3 into “Season 1 Episode 1” and Page 1 into both “Season 1 Episode 1” and “Season 1”. Now clicking on either of those will take you to the very first page, as it should be.

ETA: I experimented with adding a “Season 2” and “Season 2, Episode 1” and similar problems happened. I have a feeling there’s a lag between when the chapters are input and when they actually appear; I remember when I first put chapters in, it said there were 0 pages associated with them in the drop-down menu, even though when you would view the comic pages themselves in Edit or Quick Edit, the chapters would be checkmarked. But when I waited for a while, eventually they seemed to appear. I think.

ETA2: Yeah, by adding a new chapter, I broke everything again and deleting it didn’t seem to help. When you look at the chapters area in the dashboard, it lists “0” comics under the chapter as well as in the drop-down menu, even after deleting Chapter 2 and Chapter 2 Episode 01.

To be able to traverse chapters in the nav, they need to be consecutively numbered. (The “order number” in the chapters menu.) Did you do that?

    (Just checking the basics.)

Yep, I did that. It appears to work, it just has like a 10 minute lag, which I thought was weird?

Yeah, I was wondering ’cause it seemed ookay on your linked site.

Delays between a change and its appearance can have several sources: your browser loading the page from the cache, a caching plugin, something something database. Nothing to worry about as long as it shows up eventually.
