• Hi,

Can I ask why the navigation menu block is available in widgets, but not in the editor? Any way I can correct this?

I’m using GeneratePress Pro with GenerateBlocks Pro to create custom sidebars, but the core block I need isn’t in the editor.

    Thanks,
    Paul.

  • Hi Paul,
The navigation block is still in the experimental stage in the Gutenberg plugin for the block-editor. If you have the plugin installed, you could switch it on.
    WP-Admin > Gutenberg > Experiments

@style960 This was bugging me again, and I did some further testing. This is what I found:
Block based navigation in WordPress 5.8
Only the “Navigation Menu Block” would be available in the Widget Screen. You would need to create a menu via Appearance > Menus and that will be available via drop down list.

This is not yet available in the Post Block Editor. That’s what I mis read earlier

    Post Block Editor

    • WordPress 5.8 – only provides a Page List block
    • Gutenberg Plugin – has two Navigation blocks available for the block editor out of the box: Navigation (horizontal) and Navigation (vertical)

Navigation Screen is part of the Gutenberg Plugin Experiments and needs to be switch on

This might be a bit confusing, I am afraid. The reason is that the navigation block and screen are still under active development and only is partially available for users.

I asked in the WP Slack channel (#eature-navigation-block-editor) if there is a method to enable the “Navigation Menu Block” as well for the post editor and will update this thread, with the answer.

    All the best, Birgit

@bph @style960 The Navigation Menu in the widgets screen is the same thing as the Navigation Menu widget that was available in previous versions of WordPress. It isn’t a new block.

Because the new Navigation Block wasn’t ready to be shipped in WordPress 5.8, the widget was kept available in the widgets screen. I don’t think there are any plans to make this widget available in the post editor.

The navigation block is still being developed in the Gutenberg plugin, so can be used (in all editors) there, but it is still not completely stable and might go through some rapid change over the next few months. The plan is to ship it in WordPress 5.9 if it’s ready.

    Hi,

@bph the Navigation Menu block is specifically the one I was looking for so I can create a custom sidebar to be displayed on specific pages only. GeneratePress Elements use the block editor to build that sidebar, hence I went looking for the navigation menu block.

@talldanwp I see the new menu block in the Gutenberg plugin, a vertical menu is what I need to add. I have a deadline of 11th Sept so 5.9 isn’t an option (still appreciating the team effort behind it!).

Is there no other method to select a pre-existing menu from the editor?

    Thanks,
    Paul.

@style960 You can use the navigation block with the Gutenberg plugin. The block should allow you to create a structure that matches an existing menu when you’re adding it. I’d make sure to check it continues to work and look the same after each plugin update. Backwards compatibility should be maintained, but as I mentioned there are some pretty big changes planned for the block (https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/27593).

An alternative option for you would be to look at whether any plugins provide a menu block.

And finally, the HTML block is also an option until 5.9 if you’re comfortable rolling your own HTML markup.
