• Hi:
I’ve downloaded Hansen as I’m working through this block-theme-building tutorial: https://fullsiteediting.com/themes/

I’m working with this on a MAMP installation on my mac.

The theme seems to work except for the navigation – there’s no menu on the front end. On my menus page I get this message: “Your theme does not natively support menus, but you can use them in sidebars by adding a “Navigation Menu” widget on the Widgets screen.”

There’s no widgets link anymore in the admin and there isn’t supposed to be, correct?

When I click on the menus link in the admin/dashboard navigation it lists old menus from other themes but it doesn’t have any option to use any of them. If I create a new menu, do I need to give it a specific name and if so, what name?

    Thanks!

Hi, thanks for taking the time to try out the Hansen theme.

With Full Site Editing, navigation menus are created using the navigation block.
You can insert a navigation block anywhere on your site by using the Site Editor, or individually on a single post/page.

The Hansen theme has an empty navigation block in the header template.

To edit this, go to ‘Site Editor’ in the admin and in the header you will see an empty placeholder for a navigation block. In this navigation block you can either select a previous menu from the old system, or create a new menu by adding links to the navigation block.

Click the ‘Update Design’ button to update your changes, and your menu will be live on the front end.

Yes it is correct that there is no widgets link in the admin.

There should also not be a menus link in the admin, so I am not sure how you are able to click on the menus link and view the old style menus page, as it is not available in Full Site Editing. Do you have the latest version of WordPress and the Gutenberg plugin installed?

Thanks so much for your reply!

    1. I was working on a MAMP installation and it isn’t saving changes which was driving me crazy. Then I downloaded Hansen on a live server and then the Menu option in the WP Dashboard navigation no longer appeared.

    2. I went to Site Editor and found the menu block and selected from an old menu and it worked. However, when I add a new page to the site and then try to add it to the menu the page doesn’t come up via the search. Only blog posts show up – none of the static pages. In the non-block WordPress interface, when you go to menus and want to add new pages you can search for most-recent, or all, and they’re all listed. So the process for me was to “add page link” and paste it in then it appeared in the menu and I would highlight it and reduce it from the full url to the page name – is that how it is supposed to work?

I have the most current version of WP AND the Gutenberg plugin.

    Thanks again!

You should be able to search pages to add to the menu, but it looks like there is a bug in Gutenberg that means only posts are being searched.

Hopefully this bug – https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/29396 – will be fixed soon.

Thanks for letting me know it wasn’t something I’M doing wrong!

One more question: when building themes I’ve been using underscores as a starter theme and kept all the resets in the stylesheet. Are browser resets no longer necessary?

    Thanks!

Resets are not included in Gutenberg so if you want to use them you will need to add it in your themes.
