Naked url in text creates blog post preview, why?

  • Hi,

    I’m restyling a page and discovered that when I put a naked url in the text, without a link behind it, WordPress recognizes the url is of a blog post of mine and puts a preview blog on the page instead of just displaying the url as text.
    Why is that and how can I disable it?

    That must have been quite the surprise! It’s because WP sites are now (since 4.4) oEmbed providers. This means links to blog posts (including your own) work much like links to youtube and other oEmbed providers. The link gets automatically converted into the proper HTML to embed a video or other content.

    oEmbed links need to be on their own line in order to be recognized. If you can compose your links so they are not on their own it should prevent oEmbed discovery. Just putting an HTML entity like   in front should prevent discovery.

    If you hate the entire oEmbed Provider thing, install the Disable Embeds plugin.
