We built a working prototype social media site for a client just recently with a heavily altered custom user role for public users.

With WP Mail SMTP activated and connected to Mailgun, users that register with Gmail addresses can’t access all the functionality that should be available to their role, like editing their profiles, adding and editing posts, and interacting with other users’ posts.

Again, this only affects users who registered with Gmail accounts while the plugin was active. With WP Mail SMTP deactivated, new users that register with Gmail addresses can access all functionality as expected.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before?

Also, I’m a super n00b to posting in the support forums, so please let me know if I need to change/move/etc. this thread. Thanks!

    Hi @janinemarie

WP Mail SMTP does not alter user roles and/or capabilities. It’s not even a part of the registration process, it just sends emails and doesn’t monitor/track/modify them in any way. So this can’t be a WP Mail SMTP plugin issue.

I see that you are using ElegantThemes theme called Divi, and its module for user login/registration. I suspect this might the issue. Have you tried default WordPress registration, not the Divi one (wp-login.php?action=register)? Are there any different when registered there vs /register/?
Do you have anything unknown for you on Plugins page? Especially, Must Use: /wp-admin/plugins.php?plugin_status=mustuse.

Thanks for getting back to me, @slaffik

You’re absolutely right, our issue wasn’t related to your plugin and has now been resolved. Correlation =\= causation.
