I did the same thing and now my site is in ruins. Is there any way to get my code back?

Also, surely the code that’s missing is in the database somewhere which I can retrieve from a backup? But I’m looking at the wp_options table and I don’t see anything?

If you deactivate the plugin, and then save your widgets or adjust them in any way, then the data from the now non-existing widgets will be lost. It will not be saved or backed up anywhere unless you have an older backup of your site.

This is the case for any widget added by a plugin, and it’s just how the widget system works. Don’t deactivate the plugin that contains the widget code and then modify the widgets themselves.
