If I reinstall wordpress, does that mean I’ll have to do the website work over again?

You do not have to carry out a new install. See Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

(Forgive me, this is my first website) – where do I find the root directory to move these files?

my server doesn’t allow wp to be in the root directory so we’ve done a 301 permanent redirect from the https://www.sitename.com/wordpress to https://www.sitename.com it works pretty well actually…
