I have tried to rebuild the thumbnails and checked the permissions.

Still I can’t get any thumbnails to show up in the media section of WordPress. I believe it started sometime after adding jetpack but I have checked the plugin and even removed it and it’s still the same error.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hello WebHostPro!

If I’m understanding your question correctly, thumbnail images aren’t created independently, but live within the main uploaded image – similar to the other image sizes you can select when adding an image to a post (medium, full size).

To edit a thumbnail image, browse to your media library, click on the image you’d like to adjust the thumbnail for, and then click “Edit Image” below the image preview in the modal window.

In the Edit Image screen, on the right sidebar you’ll be able to select your Thumbnail Settings. The tooltip here says:

You can edit the image while preserving the thumbnail. For example, you may wish to have a square thumbnail that displays just a section of the image.

You can choose to edit All Image Sizes, Thumbnail, or All Sizes Except Thumbnail. The default is to edit All image sizes, but if you want to crop just the thumbnail, for example, just select the radio button next to Thumbnail.

I hope this is helpful! Please let me know if this solves your issue, or if I missed the mark.

Thanks for the reply, I think I explained it wrong. I wish I could upload an image to show. When I’m in the WordPress admin and click media > library on that page all the thumbnails are blank. I can still add the images to posts and it shows up. The error just seems to be the thumbnails on the library page.

Ohhhh I understand now! I completely misunderstood. My apologies! Are there placeholders for the images (a gray box or something), or is the entire page blank, like nothing loads?

This website has some troubleshooting steps that may be worth trying – it looks like some similar issues were posted here in the WordPress Support forums but were never fully resolved. Looks like one user had some luck by having their hosting provider update their version of PHP being used on their server. Any chance you’re running an older version of PHP than recommended?

To run WordPress we recommend your host supports:
    PHP version 7.2 or greater

Great, I was at 5.6 but up[graded to 7.0 for now. Anything newer and the whole thing breaks. Next I’ll try to find why it breaks with newer PHP and get it upgraded.

With 7.0 it still just shows squares that are light grey. My guess is the caching is acting up.

    Thanks!

Isn’t it funny how trying to solve one issue often uncovers others? Oh, technology. ??

It may also be worth checking your version of MySQL (version 5.6 recommended) – while this thread doesn’t list a specific step to fix, the OP stated the same issue with thumbnail images showing as gray boxes, and said it was caused by “MySQL damage.” It would be great if he had included more details! Ha.

Also, have you tried the Health Check plugin Troubleshooting mode to see if there are any plugin or theme conflicts?

    Very true ??

    SQL is good: MariaDB 10.2

I ran Health Check & Troubleshooting and everything was O.K. it just suggested to upgrade PHP which is not the issue. I also ran the trouble shooter and the problem still exists.

I still think it’s bunk caching issue. Just clueless how to trouble shoot it.

    Anyways, thanks for trying ??

I’ll just try to guess what the thumbnails are for now lol

What type of caching is used? And, is it server based or a plugin?
