    Hello,

I made a blog theme called “Tesla” (www.riccardolattanzi.com/myblog), which has always been completely private.
Since March 25, 2016 it has been overwritten by a commercial theme called “Tesla” (https://teslathemes.com). I can’t access the dashboard anymore, but from the file manager in my host provider I saw that the content of the folder Tesla under “themes” has been completely overwritten.
Is this a WordPress issue or a host provider issue?
    Please help, thanks.

    Riccardo

  • Neither. It’s a very unfortunate theme name clash. Happened to me once too and it’s not nice as there is no way to recover your old theme if you don’t have backups (luckily, I did).

Given the worldwide usage of WordPress and the sheer number of themes being created for download or private use, I’m afraid it’s inevitable that, every now and then, a “private” theme’s name will coincide with the title of a downloadable and, thus, trigger an update notice.

Thanks! The host provider is clueless and don’t have old backups.

Luckily I have a dropbox backup. Should I just replace the theme folder with what I backed up, or there is a smarter way?

How do I prevent this in the future? I haven’t performed a theme update, but I have autoupdate for WordPress versions, so I think this theme update started automatically.

    Thanks,

    Riccardo

In your shoes, I’d grab your backup copy and rename both the folder and the theme name in style.css to something like “Tesla rlattanzi” and then upload the amended theme. That should limit the chances of this happening again as much as humanly possible.

It’s entirely up to you if you want to also delete the WPORG Tesla theme.

Thanks, I think I will rename the folder as you suggested.
