• I noticed my theme, Parallax Frame by Catch Themes, is creating multiple sizes of each image I upload to my site. Sometimes as many as 9 copies are present for each image. I have a portfolio site so I post a lot of relatively large images, so this is a problem. I’ll be contacting the theme creator directly on this but have some general questions:

Is it typical for modern, visually advanced WP themes to create 3 or 4 copies of each image? I like the theme and don’t want to waste time looking for a replacement if this behavior is typical or necessary.

Can I set all the WP created media sizes to 0 so It creates no extras images without causing potential problems if I change the theme in the future?

Just trying to get a grip on this. 5 or 6 versions of a headshot or something within a post seems excessive and is bloating my DB and server usages.

    My site is https://www.CreatedbyCrosby.com. Thanks.

  • That is by design. Even WordPress saves images in various sizes to display on different screens.

This helps with faster load time.

It is to serve devices with different resolution and save your overall bandwidth.

For example, this file : imanifinal-web-480×320.jpg

is served on mobile devices .

It may bloat your db my little but save hugely on server usages on the long run.

Hi folks, thanks for replying. You’re suggesting there is an overall positive to this method beyond just visual appeal. I’m aware that WP creates multiple images and that’s part of the reason image count is so large.

Is it safe to zero out WPs media settings and just use the theme’s auto created images?

Or maybe I should learn to stop worrying and love the bloat.

The theme author would be the right person to tell you about its features and if its ok to zero out the default media settings.

Overtime you may have to optimize the database, for now you have to decide between page load time & bandwidth utilization v/s bloat ??

Thanks @luckychingi. I think I’ll choose to stop worrying until I run into a problem.
