I recently upgraded our wordpress install with the automatic upgrade option, and I think everything was working fine. Now the entire site is gone (error establishing a database connection) and it says Can’t Select Database on the login page.

I didn’t change anything and it is just gone all of the sudden. I am a complete web newbie, so I don’t even know where to start. I got the page up and know how to edit and add, but now there is nothing. What steps should I be taking to try to recover this?

I think my problem is that wordpress can’t find the database. I also don’t know if my database is stored in any specific location as they say mydomain_wordpress or not.

When I go into MySQL it says I have no databases, but I know I created one somewhere when I did the WP install. PhP MyAdmin says something about my mydomain_wordpress database but I know nothing about what I am doing to figure out what that means.

I have an older backup, but no, I did not take any of the suggested precautions and now I am in this place with my church’s website. My fault.

And I tried renaming the plugins folder and that didn’t do anything for me, it still says it can’t find the database

Is there any way you can meet me in chatroom so that we can sort out your problem I have skype chat on my website if you use skype.

I have been thinking on your problem and I think the problem is that when you upgraded you must have replaced your wp-config.php as that is where you database connection information is.

The only way to check that is to look in file see if your database information is there.

In CPanel I don’t show any databases in MySQL Databases section.

I know this is where I created one. How would MySQL ignore or delete my database info? On my domain login page it says can’t find “mydomain_wordpress” which is what I named the database, and in MySQL it says I don’t have any databases now.

I think the config file still points to the database, but the database isn’t listed in CPanel’s MySQL databases.

Did you have a lot of data in the database if so and you do not have backup ask your host if they have backup depending on when they last backed up you may loose most recent data.

    They can restore your database.

That sounds correct in what’s happening.

WordPress doesn’t ever do any operations related to creating/deleting databases, only the tables within the database. Further to that, the upgrade process doesn’t modify the wp-config.php file, so it’s unlikely those details have changed.

It sounds like you may need to contact your hosters support to find out what has happened to your database.

I called them today and I didn’t really know what to ask. They just said they haven’t had any issues they are aware of, everything was fine.

I suspected it may have been the host but I had absolutely no idea of what to even ask them to check on.

What would I be specifically asking them to do with my account to try to restore my site without them thinking it is just my fault and I screwed something up?

I would just ask them if they can restore your database from the backup as no one know how that database disappeared as Dion Hulse said wordpress does not create or delete database so who know what happened.

My hosting company said someone logged in and deleted the database…

Had them change the password to cPanel and FTP and they restored from a very recent backup. Finally got a hold of them again and then it was back up almost instantly.

    Thanks for the help

Glad to hear that you have got your website back Did you give your log info to anybody who could log in delete your database.
