    Hello
My own public ip address is showing in the Live traffic section, as trying to access the following url ourwebsitename.com/robots.txt?1602526417058

And it’s showing that the traffic is a bot.

However, we haven’t tried to access that url and we’re not running any bots either?

    Any ideas what this is?

    Many thanks

Hello @rdrup and thanks for reaching out to us!

This could be due to an issue with your IP Detection.

To double-check your IP detection is correct, first, check the following site and take note of your IP – (note that this detection can sometimes not be 100% accurate on cellular phone network connections): https://www.whatsmyip.org.

Then, head over to your site and go to Wordfence > All Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs and reference the area under that section that says Detected IPs and Your IP with this setting. Start from the top and check to see if any of the settings show that both of those show the same IP as the site above does.

If this doesn’t resolve your issue, can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

    Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Sorry, not sure what you mean? My ip is the same in the Detected IP, which is definitely my public ip. And this is showing as bot activity in live traffic, which I don’t understand? As I have no bot running from my public ip.

    Thanks for sending those reports!

Is your Live Traffic detecting everyone’s IP as the same IP or is it just your public IP that is coming through as a bot?

Typically when someone is using Cloudflare, they need to use the CF-Connecting-IP in All Options > General Wordfence Options. This allows Cloudflare to translate the visitor IP correctly.

Can you send me a screenshot of your Live Traffic as well?

    Thanks!

Hey Adam, thanks I’ve sent through a live traffic screenshot. It appears that other traffic is being detected with their own ip, with just my own public ip coming through as a bot.

Thanks for sending that over. Was this you that tried to access the robot.txt?

For testing sake, can you try to navigate your site from a different browser? Is it still reading you as a bot or human in Live Traffic?

Let me know what you find!

    Thanks!

Very strange, more bot access showing from my ip but I have not tried to access those urls. I have gone on the website via a different browser Opera and it is showing my ip as normal ‘human’ accessing the urls I have accessed but no bot activity. I usually use Google Chrome.

Try to clear your chrome cache. Do you use any extensions that might cause any conflicts?

It seems like something was cached in your chrome browser that was triggering the bot hits.

Let me know what you find!

    Thanks!

I’ve cleared chrome cache and it is still showing accessing urls like
/robots.txt?1602625290307 and other random numerical values, except now it’s showing as human activity not bot. However, i am only visiting main pages such as /home, /about etc.
I’m not too concerned if it’s not a security risk? I was just worried it was nefarious activity at first but would appear to be coming from me but just misinterpreted. I’ll try disabling some chrome extensions one at a time and see if there’s a conflict somewhere. Thanks again for your help.

Let me know if you find anything. I don’t believe this to be malicious, so no need to worry.

Typically the robot.txt file tells search engine crawlers which pages or files the crawler can or can’t request from your site. Its strange your site is recognizing your browser as a bot but at least you know its directly related to your browser now.

    Thanks again!
