• Ok so my links don’t work as they used to, and its been wonky for about a week or 2 already

When I am in the cpanel, I cannot see the issue so I didn’t know about it until a friend came to see my website and told me something is wrong

When they click a link, it may update to the correct page the first time (or it doesn’t) otherwise it will just refresh with the right URL but the entire page is still the landing page they first landed on

And you can try with different links, you will go to the right page but it doesn’t change to the page when you click the link (especially on the 2nd time)

For the record, I only know about this issue AFTER updating WordPress, my theme and some plugins so I don’t know if the issue was occurring prior (clients don’t usually inform you something is wrong with your site)

For the next record, here are some of the stuff I already tried
    – deactivate all plugins
    – change themes
    – cleared website cache + browser cache
    – tried a fresh htaccess

I don’t code so I don’t touch code as much as possible haha

Do let me know if you need anything else! And hopefully someone can help me T_T

    Thank you
    McKing

  • Great! Thats it!

Now please expand the menu bars clicking on the black little arrow besides “Front Page” and “Page”, and send us.

When I ‘cache bust’ the url with query arg it loads the right page e.g. yoursite/page?somerandomarg=111

But can I ask that you try testing with permalinks turned off to see how it behaves?

It seems you are on PHP 8 and this could well be the issue, can you ask your host (or use your control panel )to switch to PHP 7.4

    Hi @alanfuller

Thank you! I just change back to PHP 7.4 but it doesn’t seem to work (I’ll leave it as PHP 7.4 for now

How do I turn the permalinks off?

    Settings>Permalinks

Remember / write down what is currently selected

    Select ‘Plain’

    Save

@leemcking Try to add a new page on menu linking to Google e.g. And tell us the behavior.

@alanfuller I thought I’ve recommended about permalinks already, but no. I guess it is a good idea, thanks!

    Hi @alanfuller

By all weirdness the plain thing works for some of them

But the ones with specific urls get a 404 instead

I tried to change back but the issue comes back, so I currently put as plain

Please let me know what else i need to test for your advice ??

    Hi @baciotti

I have a hyperlink to my Facebook page, and with the plain permalinks, it opens up the Facebook link, should I still test the Google one? With plain or my usual permalinks?

    Thanks guys T_T

I think you have to add new links to menu and test them, and then update your permalinks and test them again.

    Hi @baciotti

So its working now but specific urls like in the content itself are now in error

Do i still text the new link thing? what do you mean though?

    Hi dude!

The text in content has links with the old structure (before you update permalinks), so you have to correct all of them.

Note that some links has “…/the-title-of-post” and some has “?p=123”. The first is your old links structure, the second is the new one. You can change it again to the first one to seem more “pretty” for users, but it is up to you.

    Hi @baciotti

I just change back to the old version but the issue came back. What’s happening? >.<

    Hi @leemcking,

It is a weird issue, I am very sorry. I suggest you to change again your permalinks to that worked before until we find out the problem.

On my searches, there are three things to do, and all of them you did:
    – Fresh htaccess;
    – Disable plugins;
    – Refresh permalinks structure.

    Hi @baciotti

Yes I turn the permalinks back off now :/

Yea i’ve done them… should i disable my plugins with the turned off permalinks? not sure if anything will be different though T_T

Actually I did find a guy who had a similar issue, and he tried everything he knew. he’s a developer. he tried uninstalling and reinstalling wordpress but that didn’t work. in the end, he said he nuked everything and that worked. I don’t want to go that extent though… its easier for him cause it was a new website T_T

Mine is quite a few years…

Ok, try to disable all plugins and switch the permalinks (off and enabling other options).

I suggest you to contact your hosting, if nothing works.
