• Hi guys,

I am starting a WordPress site for our Intranet. It’s a relatively small intranet for around 100 employees. Those employees are dispersed
in 3 different countries and this is likely to grow.

The Intranet must have the same look and feel- so I will use just one theme. There will be global elements, for example the staff directory and a forum. The Intranet will have one admin person based in each country that will be able to update their own pages. An overall admin person will be in control of the plugins/theme.

Would you recommend that I do a multi-site or a single site?

I appreciate your help and happy to answer any questions.

  • Hi Markus

Will the site be in one language?

I would suggest one site, multiple logins with different roles. This will eliminate the need to swap between sites in a multisite instalation.

Look at BBPress when you’re setting up the forum.

    Kind regards
    Nick

Thanks Nick, at first it will be in English, but that may change. Would that be one site with a directory or subdomain for each of country, so when they open up the Intranet it will default to their country..

    Ah I see.

If one country posts content, do you want that to be visible to the other countries? Or will it just be for the attention of that specific country? If you want all information to be shared across all countries, I’d suggest one site, using WPML (https://wpml.org/) If you want each country to have it’s own specific content that doesnt really mean anything to the other countries, then perhaps multisite is the way to go.

I’d recommend a single site myself using a fresh install of WP in a subdomain… protect the entire site behind a login. You can set up roles as suggest above for each country, or even make them categories. Using various calendars you can isolate them by country via the category. There are ways to restrict access by role by page or wrap a shortcode around content for each country also. Multisite can be hairy to manage and a single install greatly simplifies things. Multilanguage issues can be resolved via a single site plugin. A global employee directory is most important for sure. A BBpress forum would work well also, and again, parts/forums can be specific to each country if you wish. Good luck! ??

    Thanks Nick/Chris

@nick- In the news section- yes I would like whichever country to post- that it appears on all sites. Im thinking that could be done using some kind of RSS feed? Although at some point as we grow- it will probably be for just that country- and then look at how we do global news.

@chris- I’d much prefer to do it via a Single site as it does seem a lot less hassle. Then I could have subsomains for each site where they can manage their own pages.

I was thinking of installing something like Buddypress- to manage logins for non WordPress folk- those that will participate in forums.
