I am referring to the categories module in the post editor. I can add categories to a post, but can’t remove them. And I set announcements as the default category, but I am still getting uncategorized appearing on posts. I have tried disabling all the plugins to test and that didn’t work.

You can rename the Uncategorized category if you want. That’s one possible solution. Or you can delete it if you aren’t using it in any posts.

That is kind of an interesting thing though. I set my default category, tried creating a new post and the default category wasn’t set. May have to search into this…

    Wonders where this happens…

    Wonder is right… it’s a challenging codebase.
Are you able to remove categories from posts?

Yes. If you have a lot of posts it may take some time to edit. I want to say there may be a programmatic way of going about it but I can’t fully recall.

The thing I’m wondering is if this is expected behavior or if something has changed. I’ll try and prod a little more into it.

I have done the following and the problem remains.
    1. reinstall wp-admin and wp-include files
    2. repair all tables with phpMyAdmin
    3. test after renaming the plugins directory to disable all plugins, problem remains even with all deactivated
    4. repair using /wp-admin/maint/repair.php

The only possibilities I can think of are the following:

After I first installed WP, I manually renamed the database table prefix in the wordpress database, and set the config to the new prefix. I might have missed editing a field in one of the table rows to change the prefix. But I have checked each row in the various tables and can’t see any errors.

Perhaps something to do with permalinks, I am using the post name option.

I have checked my bug in another installation on a local server, and there is no problem. This bug is specific to my one installation but I can’t find it.

That is really strange. I may just have to try this out in older versions as well.

Problem was due to lack of DELETE privilege on database.
