Mutual-follow dependency for messaging

I see you wrote a plugin for mitigating spam by requiring the message sender and recipient to have a ‘Friend’ relationship.
With ‘friend connections’ turned off for sites that use bp-follow, how can we prevent messaging from users where the recipient does not follow the sender?
