• First the quick question: If I want to clone one WP install into 3 more using Multi-site, each with own subdomain, do I just export the main site, then re-import it back into MU 3 times?

Situation: I just set up a WP site for a client. Now the client wants one very much like it for 3 other languages.

They want the less-expensive way, quick n dirty is fine. They “assume” there will not be much difference between them going forward.

So first thought was “just” duplicate all the files and the database three times. A few template tweaks and done.

Using Multisite sounds good, but is it overkill for this situation?

What’s more hassle to set up, 3 installs or use Multisites?

I don’t want to screw it up and spend a bunch of (unpaid) time troubleshooting, but I also want the sites to be easier to manage. And it seems like copying the site 3X and importing 3X are about the same thing.

Is this accurate: Would the differences in setup be:
    – separate installs – all settings intact, great
    – multisite – only need to manage plugins, theme in one place, great.

    What would you do?

    What gotchas can I expect?

I don’t think MultiSite is overkill. And it’s no more/less hassle either way. Obviously the first time you set up MultiSite it’s the first time and it can get you annoyed. But once it’s set up, it’s done.

If all you need is to copy the content, then yes, export/import works great.

If you need more, there’s https://wpebooks.com/replicator/

If all you want is translation you should look at a multilingual plugin like:
    qTranslate or WPML.

Thank you for your replies. Based on your thoughts I have decided to go ahead with the Multisite and it is working out fine.

I did consider the multilingual options and might try that for a different client.

    Thanks.

i was googling and found ur solution. there’s a similar prob with me. I have over 5 domains and want to develop them on wordpress. And each domain must have separate wordpress theme(and i need to edit the themes later, like ad location, widgets) is theme editing supported on multisite now? i dont want to mess around. also working on a shared hosting, its better to install in one single database which i can backup regularly or export than mess with 5. So which way should i choose? (wordpress framework support for multisite would be awesome)

Next time make your own topic ??

Yes, you can edit themes on Multisite. But which you should chose depends on your skill set, somewhat. If you think you can do MultiSite, do it.
