multisite permission management

  • Okay then. I think the answer to this one is pretty straightforward, but it’s making my head hurt.

    I’m getting ready to launch a new version of our site running hosted blogs. I want to give owners access to their own accounts so they can work on their sites, install their own templates, upload content, etc. on but completely restrict access to the top level for the time being.

    Explanation: We have a lot of pretty cool stuff going on that we don’t want to get out yet. How can I make this work?

    Actually … that’s MOSTLY doable. They can’t install their own templates (I’m assuming you mean themes), but they can upload content etc.

    completely restrict access to the top level for the time being.

    I have no idea what you mean by this.

    this is a little more complicated than it should be because the blog isn’t yet live and open to the public

    lets say we’re dealing with blog.org

    And the user has a blog hosted at blog.org/user

    I want them to have access to their blog, but not the blog.org (the top level) content we’re still working on …

    Is this possible? Or does it make sensed to let them create their blog somewhere else – say a new WP account set up for – and then move their files over..

    The problem is that they would have access to SEE blog.org. You could probably use a plugin to make user groups so only people in a group could see the main blog, but by default MultiSite adds all users to the main blog.

    hmmm …. thanks!!!

    that sounds like it would be easier than moving a bunch of files and themes when it comes time to go live …

    can you point me in the direction of a plug in that might do the trick?

    not sure I really know what to look for – a user group plug in?

    Make the main blog admins only. Presto, problem solved.

    hmm …

    seems to work but ran into one issue. one of my users (an admin) is able to see dashboard but not see the site itself. other users seem to be accessing without difficulty,

    my guess is this is something do with the settings I’ve chosen. the options are slightly confusing on Network Privacy, the plug in I selected. Any guesses what the difference between these options is … ?

    Stuff like this makes my head hurt ..

    – I would like only logged in users who are registered subscribers to see my blog.
    – I would like only administrators of this blog, and network to see my blog.
    – I would like my site to be visible only to Registered network users.
    – I would like my site to be visible only to Site subscribers.
    – I would like my site to be visible only to Site administrators.

    I thought they were pretty self-explanatory….

    Actually, after looking this over – you’ve got more than one privacy plugin installed and running. Some of these options are the same, with older terminology.

    ah, that must be it.

    I have a plug in called “members only” installed as well as “network privacy” … an earlier admin installed the other, so I didn’t make the connection.

    but it does seem strange that some users are running into the problem and others aren’t. but I guess that’s the way it works …

    Like I said – pick one plugin.
