• Hello,

We recently got signed up with wordpress because it’s much easier to use, and we are beyond excited! However, we are not sure how to do what we’re looking to accomplish with wordpress, and I’m sure it exists, I just need some guidance on how to do it.

We currently have 2 domains, one is our online business, and we have another site for our forum. We would like for these sites to remain separate, but have a shared user base, so our customers can have access to our forum with all the same login credentials, etc. We would also prefer these 2 sites to have different layouts, because they both have different needs.

We previously had Volusion for our business, and VBulletin for our forum, but we have had several hacks and lost all of our customer base with VBulletin, so we’re essentially starting from square one.

I personally have tried to do multi network and multisite, but it doesn’t seem to work how we need it to. This included setting up Buddypress and BBPress. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, because this is an entirely new platform for me. I have experience with HTML and CSS of course, but haven’t expanded too far beyond that in recent years.

Anyway, is this kind of scenario even possible, and how would we go about doing that with plugins, etc?

    Any help is much appreciated!!

    Thanks!

  • What you’re asking is definately possible. I’ve seen it done many times in the past.

When you say “but it doesn’t seem to work how we need it to”, how exactly doesn’t it work as you expect, or what issues are you having?

Whew! I’m glad it’s been done!

Well originally, we couldn’t link up the 2 sites under one wordpress install, which, I did end up figuring out a while after posting this. We were experiencing 404’s and a few 403’s, but I was able to get that resolved doing a fresh install and mapping prior to doing anything else. That solved like 90% of my issues. On top of that I wasn’t able to see the customization preview or use the theme I wanted because it populated onto the main domain and not the sub. Also got that fixed, which has been amazing.

Now just having issues with Buddypress install and how to configure it with multisite. What we’d essentially like to do is have everyone who signs up on site A automatically gets an account on site B, and/or vice versa (however site A to site B works just fine), and figuring out how to configure Buddypress as primary on site A, but have the main forum on site B with the groups and everything. Currently getting 404 errors on all sites created with Buddypress.
