    But you really don’t need to. The point is to use one database.

    I run multisite with over 14K blogs on one database. Is there a reason you HAVE to do multi-db?

    Purely a performance concern, Dan. I have heard references to a maximum number of tables in Mysql, but if such a limit exists, the odds are that your ability to extract data from the db would have imploded already.

    Depends on teh size. WordPress.com uses multiple DBs, but … they’re at like 30,000,000 or something obscene.

    We run multi-db with 16 databases because we may scale to >50,000 sites and would rather not have to split databases when we are staring down the barrel of a gun.

    John – That’s a pretty tough call to make ?? Most people won’t be doing 50k, so we only have to consider it when we get big.

    That reference actually revers to the 32K limits of folders within Linux directories. In theory, people are referring to this and how many files and folders the flat sql files take up.
