• I’m using Donncha’s MU Domain Mapping plugin (0.5.1) with Multi-Site functionality enabled in WordPress 3.0-alpha (sub-directory).

So far it’s working beautifully, except this:

    • The *primary* blog does not have the domain mapping link under Tools. Is this by design?
    • Also I created a sub-directory blog with name “blog”. And this “blog” blog too has no Domain Mapping link under Tools. Is this also by design? Might it have something to do with the fact that WP-Multisite adds the slug /blog/ to the url of the posts in the primary blog automatically?

All other blogs I’ve created have the domain mapping link under tools, and the functionality works just fine.

Any thoughts on these would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, so you don’t accidentally map a domain to the main blog.

    Yep, that’s it exactly.

Is there any way to override this “feature”? I _NEED_ to map a domain to the main blog.

I’d been using WPMUDev’s domain mapping plugin, which had this feature. But I’m going to stop using it, as I’m preparing for the WP/WPMU merge, and I’m afraid this plugin will break (now or later), and… and I seriously cannot justify the $79/month subscription to receive updates. Yeah, I know this fee includes access to everything, but I don’t need “everything”. In fact I don’t use anything else from them except their domain mapping plugin.

I guess I don’t get why you need to map a domain to the main blog. Why not install it on that domain to begin with?

“That domain” is hosted at a “no scripting allowed here” environment. So they’re using a secondary hosting facility to run WPMU to provide various services that require server-side scripting, and mapping sub-domains of “that domain” to the WPMU installation.

In the current setup, there is this address cms.thatdomain.com, which maps to the WPMU primary domain (and this is a random domain used just for this new hosting and the CNAME mapping), and where all users go to login and access announcements and various services.

I guess I’ll have to forget about the primary WPMU/WP3.0 blog, map cms.thatdomain.com to a new sub-blog, and transfer all the content there. That’s the kind of work I wanted to avoid ??

Sounds like a lot of work to host MU there.

So no fix for this? What did you end up doing?

I need this feature too – I want to switch to a new domain name but don’t want to go through the trouble of reconfiguring everything.. It’d be much easier just to change the mapping.

If it’s not the main blog, you can just re-do the domain mapping.

If it is the main blog, change the name in the db, in all kinds of places.
