Multisite Clarity

  • Hi there,

    This, just a general question about Multisite.

    The more I read, the more confusing it gets, so I thought I would ask here…

    I have one main site on its own URL (this a directory site that covers all the UK)

    I have various smaller sites, all on their own URLs covering specific areas in the UK. Essentially these separate sites have all the same layout, info and are much smaller yet cover the same ‘local’ info to the main site.

    It’s becoming a practical issue, of neglecting some sites over others due to time.

    I need to scale down this issue, more likely get rid of all smaller sites and sink all my time into the main.

    Is multitude right for my needs…
    Can I run all my smaller sites from the main?
    The issue is, each site has a completely different URL to the main.

    From what I can see, this will only work if each smaller site uses the same URL as the main yet with a forward slash.
    This will not be worth doing if this is the case. I need separate URLs.

    Any clarity on this would be great ??

  • Multisite is great for a situation where you have a commercial entity with branches that differ mostly in geographic information. In multisite, all the resources become shared, WordPress core, themes, and plugins.

    Avoid making code customizations to themes that are shared by subsites. If you absolutely must customize theme code, instead create a child theme and assign it to only one subsite.

    Some plugins may not function the same on multisite so it would be a good idea to check it this might affect your sites.

    I prefer multisite but an alternative to multisite that you could consider is the ManageWP plugin which lets you control multiple unconnected sites from one dashboard.

    Thank you very much for replying.

    One questions still remains, the one I never seem to know for sure…
    Can I have one domain for one site (main) then completely different URL’s for others?

    Sure, you can definitely map domains using the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin.
