• I would like some advice on how to go about configuring SSL on a multisite. Do I just need one SSL certificate for the primary domain name and it will work for any and all subdomains? What if the subdomains are configured to have its own specific URL due to domain mapping, would they need to have their own SSL certificate or will the SSL certificate for the primary domain still work?

Only if you buy a wildcard SSL cert for your domain. Otherwise you have to buy one for each domain.

They need their own. See https://halfelf.org/2014/ssl-for-one-domain-on-multisite/

I talked to my host and I was informed the multisite only needs a UCC Certificate that will work with any subdomain that has its own custom URL. It is just that I need to add the domain URL for each subdomain to the UCC Certificate. Of course, the number of URLs that can be added will be limited by the plan chosen.

A UCC Certificate is a Multi Domain cert. If you have SNI on your host, you don’t have to resort to that.
