• I have a client that wants to have a social network type of site for his poetry community (Budypress), but he also wants them to have the option to have their own pages (multisite).

My question is this. Will Multisite and Buddypress work together? If not, is there a plugin that will allow network /community features to multisite, or a plugin for buddypress that will allow users to customize their profile page, kind of like MySpace use to be?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hey there,

Multisite works perfectly well with BuddyPress. You would run BuddyPress on the main site in the network and using Multisite you essentially allow all members to create their own blog with posts and pages, etc.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

You can actually run Buddypress on any subsite that you like within Multisite by adding a constant to your wp-config specifying the number of the subsite that you want to have Buddypress running on. You can find more info about running BP on a ‘secondary blog’ in the BP Codex.

Yes, but might not be easy if you have 100’s of blogs and having to keep adding that into your wp-config. It sounded like the original poster just wanted to have each buddypress member set up with their own blog which is default.

I have heard you can also set up Buddypress on each site in the network by using a plugin called “Networks” or something similar. But I would stay away from doing something like that.

Castro Boy, yes that’s right. The client has a poetry community and wants each of his members to have their own page to display their poetry on. I thought it would be nice if they could each have their own style/theme.

RIght now I have both Buddypress and Multisite running but haven’t added any users yet, so I’m not sure if it’s going to work or not yet.

On a side note, when I go to the plugins on the main admin page, most of them don’t show up. I have to go to the network admin page to see the plugins. Is there someway I can get them all to show up in the main admin page as well?

    Thanks guys!

    Hey Mike

This should work just fine! This is pretty much what buddypress on multisite was set up for so I don’t forsee that you will have many issues. As far as the plugins are concerned, this is by WordPress default.

Some plugins are “network activated” and will only show up in the Network Admin backend while others can be activated blog by blog and can be found on each individual admin page. Hope this makes sense. Annoying yes, but I am sure there is a logical reason for it. LOL

If you have Buddypress already, I’d install Commons in a Box plugin and use the GroupBlog feature. You can just install BuddyPress Groupblog on its own, too, but I love the added functionality of CBox. Then you can encourage users to start a group for their own area, and if that captures enough interest, you can create its own blog from there as part of Multisite. Group users will become users in the new subsite.

Wow Paul. Great suggestion, I actually have never heard of this feature/plugin. Thanks for bringing this one up!

If you ain’t hoyd of cBox, then you don’t know what you’re missing!

In an instant it adds rich interactivity and functionality to BuddyPress.

Haha nice! I don’t have a site with BuddyPress at the moment, I played with it before though. If I ever find a need for it, I will definitely remember cBox ??
