• Hi,
I created two WP multisite sites.

One is on an ip with no other websites and the other one is on a shared ip with another websites.

I noticed that the WordPress Multisite at the shared Ip needs to have addon domains generated for the created network websites. Otherwise those websites don’t go to the WordPress mutltisite but to the other website on the shared ip.

In the situation where there is only WordPress multisite the addon domains are not necessary.

I’m curious how that works. Can somebody explain that to me?

  • It’s the way the webhost sets up the web account on the server. They use wildcards to send the wildcard domain to the main folder, thus using an alternate one won’t work. Same goes for parked domains. They are set in cpanel to point to whatever domain is in the root folder. Add on domains are not the root folder, they are subfolders off of it.

I understand that, but what puzzles me is that they go to the other website.

What I understood was that there is a reseller account made with my WordPress multisite and the other website hanging under it. So if the wildcard goes to the main folder. Shouldn’t it be going to the WordPress multisite?

It still depends how your webhost set it up.
