I have two separate installations of WordPress (on the same server, with some plugins in common and others not) and have been experiencing widespread interface issues since the WP 5.5 upgrade. These seem to be focused primarily around form fields and buttons, including media uploads.

All of these issues are specific to the /wp-admin back end.

    – The main text editor is entirely nerfed. I use the Text editor, and now the entire toolbar is gone and I cannot switch to the Visual editor.

    – Media uploads are nerfed. The “Add Media” button does nothing. Rather than opening the upload overlay, “Set featured image” navigates the entire browser page to [my-site.com]/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=31833&type=image&TB_iframe=1. This interface is also non-functional for uploading images (“Select Files” does nothing).

    – Tags require a click of the “Add” button to add. The Enter key no longer adds typed tags, but rather saves the page (while the cursor is in the tags field). The browser also no longer suggests existing tags.

    – Sub-menus do not pop out when mousing down the main WP menu on the left-hand side. If I click a menu option, its submenu will briefly appear before the page changes.

    – The bulk select-all tickbox at the top of pages (e.g., Posts, Plugins, plugins ready to update) doesn’t work. The box will toggle ticked, but nothing below it on the page will.

    – The “CMS Tree Page View” plugin no longer displays the page tree, but only “Loading tree.”

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Update:

Installing the “Enable jQuery Migrate Helper” plugin has resolved all of these issues. (Read the plugin’s description to understand why. Prior to WP 5.5 this was apparently included in the core.)

In my case it was an outdated version of the Magic Fields plugin that was throwing deprecated jQuery errors, which impacts things all across the admin back-end.

(I’ve also learned through this that Magic Fields no longer releases updates through the WordPress plugin library! Yikes. Off to download the latest version of that plugin …)
