All plugins, themes, and WP are updated to the latest versions. Also I have not made any major changes to the site in many days (only updated WP a few days ago and a couple plugins today).

The site looked and worked fine after the WP update, so I don’t think it’s related to that. Also, the plugins that updated today were Yoast and Formidable.

    Here’s what’s going on:

    – WP media library not showing images (only generic gray rectangles), but image metadata is displayed
    – Featured images not displaying on the website, but others show fine
    – WP’s “customize” area not giving me all available options for customizing the theme/site, only letting me change widgets (and even it’s not all there)
    – WP Menu option not saving menu customization. I create subsets (for the dropdown), save it, and it makes them all primary links

I’ve contacted the host to see if it’s server related; awaiting reply (sent message to them right before posting here). I’m also checking here to see if it could be WP, the theme, or something else.

Since the site was working fine after updating WP, I’m not inclined to think that it’s related to that. Also, the theme was last updated before this problem, so it worked fine before the theme update and long after the last theme update, so I’m not inclined to think it’s the theme.

    Any thoughts?

    MORE INFO —

I noticed that posts and pages no longer have a “featured image” selected, which explains why the featured image isn’t displaying on the site. However, that is probably related to the media library issue. Also, it doesn’t explain the menu problems or the “customize” area problems.

As such, I can’t re-select the featured images due to the media library issues.

Oddly, I did notice that the image inserted into the page/post displays fine, just feature one’s don’t, nor do they display in the library.

    UPDATE —

Via FTP I checked to see if the images are on the server in the appropriate locations and they are, so the images are there, but WP won’t display them properly.

I’m starting to lean more and more to a WP issue since that was the last major update (4.5 to 4.5.1). I may try going back to 4.5 and see what happens. Going to look into how to do that.

Found a video that was recommended by others on downgrading WP, so I’m going to follow the guide and go back to 4.4.2 (the last version before 4.5) since other threads seem to point out similar issues after upgrading to 4.5. I’ll keep this thread updated on the results.

I fully downgraded to WordPress 4.4.2.

    Result: no change, no difference.

So, it’s not an issue with WP 4.5 or 4.5.1.

Back to square zero (since I have zero idea what the problem is).

Spent some time trying to reason out causes and solutions, and here’s what I’ve come up with:

Possible cause: Theme (parent or child)
    Rejected as cause
    – No changes to the theme since the last time the site was working properly
    – Some issues are not related to the theme (i.e., WP media library, WP menu creation system)

Possible cause: WordPress 4.5 or 4.5.1
    Rejected as cause
    – Downgrading to 4.4.2 had no impact on the problems

    Possible cause: plugin conflict
    Rejected as cause
    – No new plugins added since last time the site worked fine
    – Only two plugins updated since site last working properly, and they were updated today after features went haywire
    – Updating had no impact

Possible cause: database error on the host server
    Uncertain as to conclusion
    – No changes on the server since the site last worked properly
    – No server errors known at the time of this post entry
    – The database could affect these features, but not I’m not sure
    – Problems still seem related more to WordPress itself

Possible cause: WordPress itself had something go wrong
    Uncertain as to conclusion
    – The problems are related to WP features, so that would be a logical place to look

    So, I’m baffled.

Solution found (thank you to my wonderful host, https://www.leaver.com). What they said: the “post_meta table in the database was marked crashed.” Repairing it via phpMyAdmin solved all the problems.

    Thank you, Leaver & Co.!

    Hi everyone, newbie here.
@jrothra : Could you please be more detail about the fix?

    Thank you
