Multiple languages in the same domain

That said, as the answer doesn’t depend on free or pro, I will provide some elements here.

You can do it but you’ll need to code. It would be easier to mix domains and subdmomains, just using the multiple domains option:
– example.co.uk
– example.com
– it.example.com

If you want to mix domains and subdirectories, you’ll need to code your own links model and provide it to the filter pll_links_model: https://github.com/polylang/polylang/blob/3.0.4/include/model.php#L633

A links model is class deriving from PLL_Links_Model, most probably from PLL_Links_Permalinks, in your case and providing methods such as add_language_to_link(), remove_language_from_link(), get_language_from_url()… I suggest that you look at the the classPLL_Links_DirectoryandPLL_Links_Domain as a source of inspiration to create your own links model.
