multiple instances of WP using the *actual* same DB

  • Hi, are there any issues with running multiple instances of WP on one server, and these instances are referring to the *same tables* in the DB.

    I’d like to use a structure that isn’t native to WP, so I figured I could run wp a number of times in different parts of my site (with slightly different templates), but have them all hooking up to the same database tables.

  • One major problem will be your option settings, especially the Blog and WordPress addresses. With all your setups using the same table here, they’ll all have the same permalinks etc., and so end up going to the same blog.

    Kinda on the same theme, I want to install multiple blogs but just use a single database, changing the table prefix for each install. The big question is, will I be able to backup all the tables on the database by using the wp backup plugin from one of the blogs? Secondly, will the site load noticably slower by not having a different database for each blog? – I will have about 20 blogs. I’d appreciate any advice on this.

    I’ve not tried and as the prefixes will be different, I don’t think the chances are high.

    The site will only be slower is your getting hits on all the sites a lot. The load on the MySQL server will be noticeable if all 20 blogs are getting hit a fair bit. You could use query caching to try and cut this back though.

    Kafkaesqui is dead on, the bloguri and homeurl will cause problems for you as will the permalinks etc.

    I should perhaps add that I’m not interested in the blogs having the same login, the same categories or anything else, I really just want to be able to back the whole lot up on one file and know that having all the blogs in the same table isn’t going to noticably slow the site down.
