Multiple installs/blogs upgrade to 3.0 multisite

  • I’ve done a little searching and while aspects of what I’d like to know have been addressed, my precise situation doesn’t seem to have come up. A week or so ago I decided to finally take the plunge and set up blogs for some domains I’ve been hanging on to. I create separate installations using regular (non-MU) code (without reading about the new features of 3.0 – whoops). This included separate DBs, etc.

    So I came across a post on some “Blogging-Secrets-Of-The-Universe-Revealed” website that a new feature of WP 3.0 is multisite functionality. Great. I figured it was time to just bite the bullet and accost myself with this newfangled technology which would probably make my life simpler – being able to upgrade the WP code once for multiple sites sounds good to me. With the release date being May 2010 (now June??), I decided to sit back and wait before delving into too much of the design of the new domains since I’d be upgrading anyways and there was plenty of stuff to keep me occupied offline until then. That said, I’ve been taking a look at what might be required to do the install, and I’m not sure what will be required I’d like to prepare.

    And finally for the question! How can I integrate a number of already existing installations (blogs/domains) into one Granddad of a installation governing them all? Right now I have one blog that’s been around for awhile, but then I have 3 new domains that I recently installed WP with but have made no changes to, so I could delete the installation from if required. I did create separate databases for each. Do I need to get rid of the new DBs? I understand the basics of install, but considering I already have an existing blog, how will that be impacted with 3.0 and using multisite?

    Just so this is straight, these are not subdomains. An example would be:

    Blah.com – about yoyos
    Blahblah.com – about Frisbees
    Blahblahblah.com – about bouncy balls

    Get the picture? Each a separate name and content unto itself.

    Any direction in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated!

  • First off, multisite has no notion of different installs and no way fo finding them. ?? Just getting that out there.

    Second, what you want is entirely do-able. Been doing it in wpmu for a while. In a nutshell:

    Backup EVERYTHING. ?? The databases, the files, everything.

    Pick which one is going to be the main install, the mother ship if you will.
    Set up the sub-blogs as placeholders for now.
    Go to the other installs. Export the content.
    Go back to the sub-blogs. Import each one.
    Move over all the plugins & themes from the other installs into the one 3.0 install. you only need one copy of each, so if half of your other installs all used the same contact form, you just need one copy now.
    If you have a bunch of users on the others blogs, there’s no easy way to bring them over. you can add each one to the main install manually though, then assign them to the right sub-blogs.

    okay, so now you should have subdomain or subfolder copies of all your other blogs. you need to *map* your domains to them.

    Yes it works the exact same way.

    Go back server side to the old installs. You won’t be able to access it via the domain anymore, but often yourIPaddress/~username/cpanel/ works. Clean up & delete the old stuff.

    Sit back & bask in the knowledge of a job well done. If you look at my profile information, all the blogs I have listed there are in ONE installation.

    I’m starting to update one of my 2.9.2 installs to RC1 right now. If everything is working alright, i’ll turn multisites on and try to import my other blog.

    But i’m using lighttpd on a VPS. Running both blogs on it. How do i configure it to work with the subdomains thing ?
