• I have been running a blog for some time now https://myallacrossamerica.org/
I used multi site and set up the new users sites to be sub-domains. The mutli-site/buddypress environment looked to be what I needed to provide some features on my blog. The site is using suffusion theme and I have gradually worked my way in to learning to use the custom theme design for that theme. The site is far from finished. I also started a site
https://smartphoneminimalist.com/home-2/ which I thought I might play around with the multi-site feature and I see that the plug in has been discontinued. Could someone help me with the BitNami WordPress Stack

    https://bitnami.org/stack/wordpress for those unfamiliar

We don’t support the external installers like that. Given that WP’s ‘dependancies’ are PHP 5.2.x and MySQL, it’s pretty bog standard for servers.

You can install WP and then activate Multisite manually.

Thanks Mika,I am certain I can handle that code insertion. I do have another question. As I said the dot org site is basically in a embryonic state and I was not too concerned with some issues I noticed. The fact that users would register at the dot org home domain and have to register independently to access the ancillary sites. The end game would be for a single registered user name and password and not have to log on to each individual site. I was not sure if that would have been related to sites being sub domains as opposed to directories or if it was one of the inherent issues the multi-site plugin was plagued with.

Multisite is not a plugin, and if you persist in calling it that, we’ll start thinking you actually used a plugin and didn’t create a network properly ??

Users belong to the network. When they register, the account is made for the whole network, and they have read-only (and comment) access to all the sites on your network. One username and password works for all sites on the network, but with mapped domains and subdomains, you have to log-in per site due to how browsers protect you from cross-domain hacks. (This is security, this is good, don’t fight it ?? )

Now you can set it up so users are automatically registered to a site when they visit, or that they’re added to all sites when they register, or myriad other ways. It just depends what you want. But the default is to register on the network and not be added to any site.

Mika, I am. Currently working my day job,I guess you can tell by how I am hacking my way around the wordpress world. I really need to check on that multi-site thing since I am sitting here at work remembering that I activated multi-site, telling me that it was a plugin. As I said earlier I believe it was a plugin wordpress “took away” recently. I would like to remain in contact as my site evolves. I can only go so far as to say that there are other people involved in this project and I know for sure the network is not set up properly. That being said should I keep the status of this topic open?

Oh god, if you really did use a plugin to activate Multisite, just scrap it and start over. Do it manually, because I promise, this will help you in the long run.

Thanks for the advice Mika. That prompts two more questions. Your thoughts on sub-domains or sub-directories. Do you have a suggestion in that regard? I host through GoDaddy. My hosting account allows for unlimited subdomains. Your opinion on site wizard I believe it is called. I played with it but did not take it too far. All these issues are not a big deal, even though users set up last time I looked about 500 sites. The only sites I am concerned with right now are the “family of sites” and those are easily recreated. After you read and comment on this I probably will have another question or two or three. Thanks again,RickO

I never use site wizards. And if you use WordPress, you won’t need it.

GoDaddy unlimited subdomains may or may not support wildcard subdomains (that requires a dedicated IP, I think).

Personally I use subdomains when the sites are related, but not the same, and subfolders when the sites are all meant to be very much siblings ??

I need to revisit some of the godaddy hosting options. When I created “family of sites” subdomains originally, each got set up with there own wordpress installation. My quick thought is that they need to run off the same wordpress install. I think I need to look at how to do that properly. What you are suggesting is to delete all sites except for the dot org
mother site. Deactivate multisite and delete all related files. I do not have a problem with that, I believe I mentioned that before. What I need to be certain of is the process of creating the subdomain of the sites I want to recreate and how to point them to a single wordpress install. I am guessing that is how you carry the same theme and basic site layout throughout. For these sites I want to continue to use suffusion theme. I hope you do not mind me kind of rambling on here a bit But I still have a lot that I want to learn and I appreciate your lending an ear.

It’s not that hard ?? Don’t overthink it, becuase you can get yourself in a froth.

    1) Install WordPress
    2) Activate Multisite
    3) Create a sub-site
    4) Create a subdomain on GoDaddy

That’s the basics. Now step 4 is the ‘tricky’ one, but it’s really not. See all you have to do is, when you create the Subdomain within GoDaddy’s control panel, is make sure to point the subdomain to the right place.

    Check out this image:

The ‘folder’ choices below your subdomain name are what you want to tweak. By default it installs in a folder called /subdomainname

You want this to be one folder UP (i.e. where ever you installed WordPress) ?? That’s all.
