• I am trying to get a multi-site network together using subdomains without using wildcards because 1and1 does not support them.

I have all my subdomains created and pointed to the folders the other installs are located in, but I’m not sure how not using the wildcard will change the directions for installation.

Also, do I have to do edits to the configs of the subdomain installations, or just the main one?

Thank you in advance for your help!

I’ve gotten a test site up and running – somewhat – but, the trouble with it is that I can’t import anything (the page shows up blank), and it’s making it look like I need to create a new installation of WordPress for every subsite that I made. It won’t let me go to the backend what-so-ever…

If I am going to have to have installations for all of the sites, then I want to try and mash all the six sites I have together into one without deleting everything and restarting… However, when I attempted to set up the multi-site install with it, it errored out and I couldn’t sign back into the admin area until I changed the wp-config and .htaccess files back to non-multi-site settings.

I feel like I must be doing something horribly wrong – but I’ve gone over all kinds of forums and followed the instructions as closely as I can with minimal success. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Again, many thanks for your patience on this!

no, you do not need to make multiple installs.

The import button giving you a blank page means a php error – check your error logs.

Did you go to Super Admin -Sites, and click “add a site”?

Also – you;re on 1&1, yes? that’s probably half the problem right there.

It only gives me the error after I click WordPress for the import method. I added the required plugin and activated it – but it just shows up blank.

Yes, I added my five subsites there, but when I click the link to go to the backend, it attempts to go to example.com/subsite/wp-admin and therefore errors out…

I did follow the ebook – it is helpful… I’m just wondering why I can’t get it right – because the instructions seem relatively simple.

    – and 1&1 is notorious for having trouble with WordPress? Blah!!!!
