• Hi I’m a newbie at multisite so please be patient.
I have agreed to set up a network of church sites within a group of sites so was wondering how to best approach this.

The first site, would be, if you like, the ‘portal site’ or holding site, showing news/articles from all 4 churches.
The other 4 church sites could use the same template but would need to be able to share news and articles between them and also have their own existing URLs, with new logins and passwords.
I would have to be able to administer all 5 sites from the ‘portal site’ login as well.

Is this possible and which way would be the most efficient way of setting it up.

    Many thanks

    Daniel

Yeah, Multisite can do that ?? the four church sites would have the same logins for each USER but you can limit the users you add to each site.

That’s all out of the box stuff ?? install WP in your main location, and then turn on MultiSite. If you want the sites to be more “their own” make them SubDomains, and if you want them more shared, make them Sud Folders.

How would I show a news item form one site on both the ‘Main site and the sub site ?

There’s a plugin called SiteWide Tags Plugin (bad name, I know), but it can actually do that. It can collect all posts from ALL sites onto one of the sites, but the posts will link BACK to the originating site.

Diamond Multisite Widgets. This is a super plugin for what you want. You can put the news of all sites in the sidebars of the others, make a news block for the whole network and even a network news feed. It’s very flexible.
Ipstenu’s suggestion is a plugin that copies all posts to the database of the main site where it (re)publishes everything. Diamond Multisite Widgets just grabs the titles if you want, makes an excerpt and doesn’t copy anything to another database. I highly prefer it.

Diamond is lighter (and actually it’s what I use), but SWT lets you pull in the featured image and have it act like … y’know, the whole site is one big shared thing ??

    Hi

ok so it’s between the 2 then Diamond Multisite & SiteWide Tags Plugin.
    Many thanks for the info.
So just to confirm before attempting this (Gulp)
I can have a main site https://www.mainsite.com with multisite turned on and then create subdomains which will be https://www.subone.com, https://www.subtwo.com etc
and they would have to have the same login for admins to write content? is this correct
And using the above plugins I can have news items on the subdomains.com share to each other and/or the mainsite.com

Ah yes, but that’s another thing really.
Basically what you wil get is mainsite.com and then subone.mainsite.com, subtwo.mainsite.com (or mainsite.com/subone, mainsite.com/subtwo, depending on whether you choose subdomains or subfolders for your subsites). That’s the basis of a multi. What you are looking for next is domain mapping to connect these subsites to different domains. I have no experience with that myself, but there are plugins to map for you.

Ah Ipstenu seemed to suggest this was possible ‘out of the box’ with multisite. Perhaps I didn’t explain it correctly.
All the churches need to have their own URL but share the common database or at least the posts from each other.
So what I need then is to do the above and add a mapping plugin too right ?

Almost ‘out of the box’. It wasn’t clear to me (perhaps neither to Ipstenu) that you were talking about different domains. But there’s hardly a problem, just make your network and install a domain mapping plugin.

Excellent thanks for all your help.
If you have any knowledge of a good church template to start from let me know and once again thanks

    Daniel ??

If you want to see a site already doing what you’re proposing (as conceptual proof), see https://emmanuelpress.com/

So yes. multisite, then add the domain mapping plugins, sitewide tags and yes you can even use diamond multsite widgets with that too.

Oh no, I knew it wasn’t out of the box (out of the box is basically a massive list of all posts). But once you get all the posts on one site, it’s easy(ier?) to sort them out ??

    You guys rock

Thanks for all the help ??
