Multi-page in sub-directory

during setup of my multi-site network I chose the option to create new site in a sub-directory. e.g.: blog1.mainsite.com and not mainsite.com/blog1.

But now, whilst trying to setup a new blog it does create the blog in a subdirectory instead of on a subdomain.

Anyone any tips on how to solve this?
