Hi – I recently created a WordPress network install inside of my VPS hosting account using a subdomain setup.

I have multiple domains and one – idxmlspress.com – is pointed to the wordpress network install located at /public_html/idxmlspress.com.

I have several working subdomain sites: traditional.idxmlspress.com, urban.idxmlspress.com etc. for DEMO sites that I wish to continue to access under the subdomain address. I want to keep NEW sites as subdomains UNTIL client signs off on going live and then be able to access the site under the client’s domain not the subdomain.

I have created my first client site at caferealtyny.idxmlspress.com. Now that the site is finished I am ready to point the godaddy dns for caferealtyny.com to caferealtyny.idxmlspress.com. I will want to do this for additional sites as well.

    1. Would you recommend Domain Mapping by mpmudev or WordPress MU Domain Mapping? I do not mind paying the $20.
    2. Will it matter that my network install is NOT the only wordpress install in my account and in an add-on domain not in the root?

    Thank you in advance.

I’m using WordPress MU Domain Mapping and so far so good. I haven’t used the other.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “Not the only WP install”. I have both subdomain sites and sites that were once subdomain but are now their own domain-branded sites and they work fine. Do you just mean that you have several WordPress installs in your VPS account? If so, I don’t see why it would matter, but that’s definitely a question for your host. On WP Engine it causes no issues at all.

I’m also using WordPress MU Domain Mapping. In my hosting setup, this is what I need to do:

    1. either buy the new domain, or if registered elsewhere, create a domain zone file in my hosting account, and then get the domain pointed toward my hosting
    2. create a symlink so that the new domain redirects to the main site’s domain name, I use SSH to do this
    3. in the WP Network admin dash, go to Settings–Domains, and add the subsite ID number and the new domain.

You should contact your host about their specific environment, and how you can accomplish #2. #1 & #3 will be the same for all of us.

Is this the question you were asking?

You can also do it without a plugin: https://halfelf.org/2014/mapping-domains-without-plugin/

I buy the new domain, point it to my nameservers, add the domain to my hosting account as either a parked domain (on top of my network) or an add-on domain that points to the same place I installed WP.

The reason I use an add-on is that if I need an SSL cert for the domain I’m adding, it needs to be an add-on. It’s more hassle on setup, but works fine.
