• I installed WordPress on a free 1and1 account at xrlq.net. Installation went fine, as did a couple of test entries, comments, etc. But when I run import-mt.php and click “let’s go,” I get a blank screen except for the Word Press logo, and nothing is actually imported. Any ideas what may be causing this?

Yes. I even tried deliberately misnaming the file to see if it behaved the same way. It didn’t – that time I got an error message stating that the file did not appear to exist.

I have a 1and1.com server too, and it worked fine for me, everytime. Please refer to The MT import HowTo, and follow it step by step and you should be all set.
Start from scratch, from exporting the entries from MT, that is.

and avoid IE for exporting… ??

Which is what the HowTo tells you, in a way.

Already did that. I also checked the import.txt file at the command line with “more” to make sure it looked right. And, to top it off, I even did a successful import of the same import.txt on another server, ICDSoft (see https://wp-test.xrlq.com/). If I have to stay on ICDSoft, I will, but I’d rather move things to the free 1and1 account if possible.

I upgraded and imported yesterday on my 1and1 server and had no problems. Are you sure you aren’t skipping a step?

Amazing!! I too have an ICDSoft account, besides the 1and1 account!!
@xrlq, I can help you out with the import, if you need help.
mail at carthik dot net, or at the #wordpress irq channel(preferred)

2fargon got it to work for me by breaking the import.txt file into several parts. Apparently, 1and1 can’t handle large migrations.

The maximum size I could get to work was a little below 1MB. Your mt export file was almost 4 MB, 88320 lines of text!! My jaw dropped, literally! ??

If you’re uploading a file via php…like with phpmyadmin…most ISP’s limit php uploads to 2MBs. It’s best to break a large file up into chunks. Or upload it via ftp and get your host admin to import it into the database.

That was not the problem. He had uploaded it using ftp. The problem was th page got timed out before the php script had a chance to finish reading the input text file once!

I too have just installed WordPress on my host, which also happens to be hosted by ICDSoft (they are very good, by the way), and also am having the exact same problem when trying to import my MT import.txt file.
To recap, when I click the “:let’s go” link, I get a blank page with the WordPress logo on the top and nothing else happens.
The import.txt file size is 1921999. Could that be the problem?
Any help would be most appreciated!

What editor did you use to edit the import-mt.php file?
I noticed several single line comments in that file that are much longer than 80 characters, and some text editors (including pico) will automatically wrap them for you, making them unparsable by php.
I suggest downloading your edited file to insure that no hard-breaks have been inserted.
This can also be fixed in WordPress by not having any lines (especially commented lines) longer than 80 characters in any files that need to be user-edited.
