Moving WP website to new host

  • My site was up and running on PowWeb, but it was shared with other websites and I wanted to move it, so I asked PowWeb how to do it and they said download all my files (so I did) and then get a new hosting account and upload all my files (so I did) and when I did that I just got an error message that WP wasn’t installed on my new host, so I installed WP, but WP isn’t reading any of the files I uploaded. How do I tell it to do that?

  • PowWeb gave you incomplete information and you will have to go back and get a database export from phpMyAdmin. The only important files you brought away from there are in /wp-content/uploads/ (images and such). Your actual site — all pages, posts, comments, users, etc. — are/were in the database.
