moving WP from local host to live server, need most current instructions please.

  • Hi all,

    I have seen so many methods, forum posts and blog entries on how to move a WordPress site, developed locally using MAMP, to a live server.

    Some involve using text editors to find and replace URLs in the .SQL Database, some don’t.

    Can anyone confirm (preferably with a link) which is the most up to date method to do this and which applies to the most current versions of wordpress, MAMP etc as of Feb 10th 2012?

    On my local host I am using:
    WP: 3.3.1
    MAMP vers: 2.0.5
    and phpmyadmin vers: 3.3.9.2
    in case this matters.

    hey esmi, thanks.

    My only problem there is I cannot work out which of the options listed there apply to my situation.

    I am moving a wordpress site developed locally using MAMP to a live server owned by my webhost. So I think that I need to change URL from https://localhost:8888 to https://mysitesURL.com.
    The best explanation for how to do this comes under the title “moving wordpress within your site” but this is not what I am trying to do!

    Which of the options on the wordpress codex you quoted best suits my situation please?

    Do you have any advice regarding whether it is best to change domain name then move to the new server, or move to the new server then change domain name, or doesn’t it make any difference?

    OK, I’m having a similar question:
    I have built my site on a mac server using mamp and now need to make the site live to the world on the same server. At the moment, it’s in my personal website folder, and is only accessible on my network. How do i get it out to the world, but keep it on the same server? This is a dedicated server with a UPS and it was the intention to deliver our site with this server. Thanks all!

    How do you guys change all the images from local to the web url? I just found out that relative links don’t work in wordpress unless you make some changes or add a function. But is there an easier way to do it? I know there’s a search and replace plugin as well but that seems a little risky to me.

    Hi. I have a blog with wordpress which is an online blog, not created on a local host and then transferred, but simply directly created on the web.
    I would now like to change that and am working on a blog which is currently on the local host on my computer. I would like to make it live online when I am done.
    I have 3 quetstions, though:
    1. I would like to keep the web address I have, however, since it is a business. How can I give the new live wordpress blog the address of my older web-based blog and then delete the older one?
    2. In order to make the new one live, must i have deleted the older one, since the webaddress and domain have to then belong to the newer one?
    3. My domain expires in a month. I am confused if I need to keep the domain to have the webaddress?

    any help would be super.

    1. If you used your own domain name on your wordpress.com site, you’ll need to re-point it to your new self-hosted site.

    2. No but you cannot use the same domain name on two different sites simultaneously.

    3. Yes – you need to renew your domain name regularly if you intend to continue using it.
