Ok, my brain is officially fried!!

I have followed the Moving WordPress within your site codex instructions to the letter but still cannot complete the move and get it to work satisfactorily – I received some good help yesterday on this forum with links to more ‘how to’ stuff – all saying pretty much the same thing – no joy.

My current wordpress blog has been changed to a static front/home page and sits within my hosts server as public_html/index. I want to move all files to the public_html and loose the index folder and reference.

    take a look at https://www.windsorartscene.com

You’ll see the URL as https://www.windsorartscene.com/index – that’s what I want to loose.

I go to MYADMIN, log in – go to General change both URLs to https://www.windsorartscene.com and save changes.

I get a page 404 at this stage – no worries the instructions say.

I then move (not copy) all the files and subdirectories that are in the index folder to my public_html

Job done according to the instructions but am unable to access MYADMIN or my site.

I have checked the database on my server and the URL update in the Options file is correct.

Arrrrgggh!!! Can anyone help me get this sorted?

  • I see you set everything back I assume?

Is there anything else in your public_html root directory?

Anything that could be interfering… like an index.html, etc…

Thanks for the reply and for the gen yesterday! Yes, I have set everything back.

This is what sits on the server at root level

    .DS_Store
    .htaccess.bak
    sitemap.xml.gz
    .htaccess
    sitemap.xml
    Index (folder containing WP)

I think you’ve help with your question – I have looked in the .htaccess file and it contains this

    RedirectMatch permanent ^/$ https://www.windsorartscene.com/index

    # BEGIN WordPress

    # END WordPress

So I guess I need to delete this as it is referring to the URL I am trying to change? – e.g. I am trying to move all to the root where it should then read https://www.windsorartscene.com

    Great, Great, Brilliant and Good!!!

I need to get braver about looking in unknown (to me) files – cleared the htaccess files and have now successfully moved the WP files and all is working.

    Thanks for your assistance.
