• (This is the first time I’ve moved a WordPress site) I moved my WordPress site from one account to another within a provider (FastHosts) having previously moved the domain name to my control. I then restored the backed-up database into a new database I’d created. I amended my backed-up wp-config.php to reflect the new database name, username, password and host. I then restored the site’s files from a winscp backup.

When I tried to login I was invited to reinstall WordPress.

I wondered if the table prefixes were wrong as when I looked in the database the prefixes were not ‘wp_’. So I changed that setting in wp-config.php to reflect reality.

I’m still invited to reinstall WordPress.

I’m unsure what to do next and would appreciate advice. Can I simply reinstall WordPress yet recover my old pages and posts, which are after all sitting there on the server? If so, how? If not, what is a check-list of what I should try now? I’m stuck.

  • Just clear the new database and try again. Check your prefix and make sure it matches the tables in the database.

You can also use a plugin called All In One Migration and another called Duplicate
