moving wordpress to my website

    Hi,

    New poster here and not the most technically minded when it comes o this sort of thing, so please bear with me.

    I have a website for my photography business and a seperate wordpress blog. My site I have hosting for, but my blog is hosted by wordpress, at the time I was unfamiliar with blogging and wasn’t sure if it was for me so opted for the quick and easy option.

    I am now at a point where I am planning some minor changes to my website, but one of the bigger things I want to do is incorporate the blog within my site rather than having them seperate.

    For refference, my website is

    My blog is currently at
    https://davidwalkerphotographyblog.wordpress.com

    From what I have read so far, I can install wordpress in a subdomain, so I can have for example photographerinessex.com/blog.
    I also understand that it is possible to migrate all my existing content from the current wordpress.com blog to the new one. All looking great so far.

    My only real question at the moment is what happens to all the existing links to my current content? Any links I have made myself I can easily change to the new locations. But what about all the links out there that other people have made? Is there any way that they can be redirected to the new blog so that the old one can be shut down?

    My ideal situation would be to maintain the traffic currently reaching my existing blog to continue on to my website. Is that something that’s possible or do I have my head up in the clouds?

    What you should do is use the Domain Mapping upgrade at wordpress.com
    That will keep the blog where it is, no links break, all your traffic and search stuff gets redirected nicely and then in a year once everything has settled down consider moving to your actual domain.

    To do this, you need to create the subdomain blog at your webhost. Note: what you wrote above is a subdirectory
    photographerinessex.com/blog
    A subdomain will be
    blog.photographerinessex.com

    This should help:

    I know this is spending money but as nothing breaks and traffic stays the same it’s very probably worth it.

    Can I just check a couple of things with you. I assume I set up WordPress on my subdomain now and use that straight away for all new posts.
    Do I still need to migrate all my existing content to the new location? Do I do that now or in a year’s time as you say?

    You don’t need to do anything to do with moving. Everything stays exactly as it is right now. The upgrade does all the redirecting.

    The benefit is you stay part of the wordpress.com system – with tags, their search, no need to upgrade things etc – but readers see your url.

    In a year, when the domain mapping upgrade runs out, or when you feel the need for new plugins/themes which you cannot get at wordpress.com then you’ll need to move things. But until then just get the upgrade and carry on exactly as you have been.

    Something isn’t quite working.

    I have set up the CName record, I think. And purchased the domain mapping record and set the primary domain to blog.photographerinessex.com

    However when I go to that address in my browser I get nothing.

    I assume it’s the CName record that I have set up wrong, as I fumbled my way through that without really understanding what I was doing. This is what I have put in the fields, does it look right?

    NAME: blog.photographerinessex.com.
    TTL: 14400 Same as all the existing records)
    TYPE: CNAME
    CNAME: davidwalkerphotographyblog.wordpress.com

    Hi David – if you want your WP blog to actually be on the same server as your existing site, you DO need to move your content from WP.COM.

    Is that what you are trying to do?

    Yes that’s the main aim. To have my blog on my website.

    Keeping previous links redirected to the new blog on my site is and added bonus that would be very desirable.

    No I’ve not seen that.

    I have not installed wordpress yet. I think I may have misunderstood the previous advice, my understanding was that I was avoiding doing that for now?

    I think the previous advice misunderstood what you were asking about :).

    Installing WP in a sub-directory – say:

    photographerinessex.com/blog

    is likely the easiest way to go – you can just install WP in a folder called “blog” on your existing site.

    As to the redirects, I’d suggest asking on the WP.COM forums – as they really know the best way to handle those.
