• I’ve moved my wordpress to another domain keeping it in the same file… I imagine that I did the lazing man(or man that knows very little about Php) way.. I’m using Fantastico and set up the new wordpress(I think it’s probably the new version of wordpress also). Now when I go to the site, i can view the home page of the blog but all links when clicked go to the old one.

I realize I have to change the file from wwww.Globemerchant.com/TravelBlog to https://www.AGreatFare.com/TravelBlog…

Some instructions talk about going into the database.. while others say to find the home site and blog site settings…. Is there a way to open up one of the php files and make those two changes? I can’t seem to find any file that has the domain listed…. which file do I need to change?

Is there a problem with the compatibility? Do I need to upgrade the 1.5 first on the old domain and then move the files? I tried changing the home URL and blog url to the new one, saving it, downloading via FTP the complete wordpress site and load it to the new URL but still now luck…

Any easy way to get all the links to stay on the new site?

I need pretty specific instructions because I am way outside my comfort zone when I work on this!

    thanks,
    David

I was able to do that and the index.php page comes up on the new site… but all links still link back to the old site…. I can’t even get into the dashbooard because it automatically goes to the old sites dashboard……. The new site is AGreatFare.com/TravelBlog and the old site is Globemerchant.com/Travel Blog There must be another setting in wordpress 1.5 that sets the links to point to globemerchant.com

    any ideas?

    Sorry? WordPress 1.5?!!

    yes ma’am… it’s an antique!

I’ll say! I’m not sure I can even remember what the dashboard looked like back then (7 years ago?) Have you reset your permalinks?

    no… I haven’t…

The permalinks page looks like this..
Should I try to put in the new domain lines here:

“Use the template tags above to create a virtual site structure:

    Structure: __________________________________________

the examples are https://globemerchant.com/TravelBlog/archives/123… would it make a difference if I added https://AGreatFare.com/TravelBlog/archives/123

Below is the information on the permalinks page without the organization it has on the browser…
    Edit Permalink Structure

By default WordPress uses web URIs which have question marks and lots of numbers in them, however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URI structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and longevity of your links. A number of tags are available, and here are some examples to get you started.

    Structure: /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
    Result: https://globemerchant.com/TravelBlog/2012/01/20/sample-post/
    Structure: /archives/%post_id%
    Result: https://globemerchant.com/TravelBlog/archives/123

For the above to work you must have something called mod_rewrite installed on your server. (Ask your host.) If that isn’t available, you can prefix the structure with /index.php/ . This is the recommend method if you are on any web server but Apache.

Use the template tags above to create a virtual site structure:

    Structure:

If you like, you may enter a custom prefix for your category URIs here. For example, /taxonomy/categorias would make your category links like https://example.org/taxonomy/categorias/uncategorized/. If you leave this blank the default will be used.

    Category base:

Should I try to put in the new domain lines here

No. What permalink structure is currently being used?

    Thread Starter globemerchant

    (@globemerchant)

Looking at your site, it seems that you haven’t actually changed any of the urls. review this Codex section again.

    Thread Starter globemerchant

    (@globemerchant)

ok… here is where something weird is happening because I did that step over and over…

    1. change the urls on the old site(WordPress and Blog in general settings) to the new site and save the page
    2. download wordpress and then load it to the new site
    3. check it… and all links work..
    4. go back to old site to change the links back to the old site..
    5. check the new site and all the links now point to the old site again…

Why would changing the links on the old site affect the links on the new site? If I shut down the old site will none of the links on the new site work?…hmmmmmm

Are you using the same database for these 2 sites?

    Thread Starter globemerchant

    (@globemerchant)

hmmmm… it’s two different domains set up on the same server and they were set up using Fantastico…. so I would think that the databases are different… but the new site must be using the old database…

so it sounds like the old database needs to be moved to the new site and the new site must then connect with the old database on the new site?

You should be able to access the MySQL server directly via your hosting account’s control panel and check to see if you have 2 separate databases/ If you have, check the wp-config.php file on the new site and make sure that it is pointing to the correct database.

    (@globemerchant)

Actually… this may make a difference.. I was thinking about it when I was driving home… the new site is set up as a subdomain of the old domain… so all the data bases are together in the same account.. would that make a difference as to what I need to do?

    Thread Starter globemerchant

    (@globemerchant)

OK… I think I got it working… I ended up using FTP to reload the program and when I went to sign in it said to wait while it fixed the databases…. it fixed them in a minute and then I signed in and just had to change the blog address… so I think I’m set… and I have the latest version of the blog…… so I can retire my antique!.. thank you for you help.. I appreciate it..

    David
