Moving WordPress site from sub directory to root directory

  • Hi all,

    I have a WordPress site in a sub directory and I want to move it into the root directory – currently there is a HTML site (bleurgh) in the root directory that I wish to remove (the WordPress site is pretty much an overall).

    What is the best way to do make this transfer?

    The WordPress site comprises of 312 pages, do I need to change the links manually from .com/wordpress to .com or is there a way to do it automatically?

  • My own experience: use the plugin “All-in-One-WP-Migration”. With this plugin you can quicly EXPORT the complete finished WP-site mysite.com/wordpress/ (files +database) to one big file on your computer. Install a new second basic WP-site in the ROOT, only load the plugin ‘All-in-One-…’ and now you can IMPORT your complete wordpress-site FROM your computer. In this way you’ve copied the complete site from ../wordpress/ to the root.
    You don’t need to change URL’s.

    I think you first need to remove the old website from the root, or at least remove or rename index.html/php.

    Thanks very much willem0, I will look into “All-in-One-WP-Migration”.

    @niallasd I would recommend doing a back up your site before the move. That way if you need to restore it back you have that option.
