• I’ve recently undertaken the task to move an instance of WordPress from the /wordpress directory to the root directory (public_html). I followed the various instructions available for this and also installed the Velvet Blues Update URLs plugin to ensure all the URLs are updated correctly, along with ensuring .htaccess and associated files are correct. I also went through the database.

The issue I’m having is that when I then rename the /wordpress folder before deleting it, to confirm that everything is working, I can no longer access wp-admin – I get a white screen.

I checked this with other experiences and tried items such as emptying cache, increasing memory and refreshing the browser, but still no joy.

I also get the white screen when I go to some sub-pages on the site.

I’m wondering if I might be missing something so that we can have a clean version of the site in the root directory?

  • I usually recommend the Duplicator plugin, even if you are just moving from one folder to another.

sounds like you haven’t update the WordPress path in .htaccess file?

Thanks Keith, I’ll take a look at that.

Liew, I did update the .htaccess file, so it’s not that.

I also managed to successfully clone the site to a Staging folder (using ManageWP), where it didn’t copy the /wordpress folder and everything is working correctly. Perhaps the next step might be to clone it back.

    Thanks for your input.
