Moving to new theme

This may be a dumb question, so sorry in advance. I’m looking to move my site to a different theme and I’m trying to determine what the best way to do this is. I’m guessing installing another wordpress instance on my site and getting everything setup before directing traffic to that site? Would this be the easiest way? How would I accomplish this..any information and guidance would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.
