    Hi,

I’m in the process of transferring my self-hosted blog to a new host. I’ve read a few tutorials about how to do it, but want to verify a few things.

I’ve already taken care of transferring the domain to the new registrar (I know this isn’t completely necessary) and installing WordPress on the new hosting.

It sounds like all that needs to be transferred to the new WordPress installation is my wp-content folder (which I’ve saved to my computer using Filezilla) and my database (which I downloaded using phpMyAdmin, the same way I backup my blog).

Is this all that’s need? Also, what’s the difference between downloading the database from phpMyAdmin and using the “Export” tool from the Dashboard? The “Export” tool seems so much simpler.

Thank you so much for your help.

    Matt

  • The export tool is easy if you just want to move posts and pages. And yep, you can move the plugins and theme files via FTP. I have found that with a site that has a lot of categories, they don’t always seem to migrate or their IDs get screwed up. Also, bookmarks/links don’t survive an export. At least none of mine have.

It does seem to also migrate most of your plugin and other settings but it never hurts to check things out to be sure, do some tire-kicking, once you’ve imported to the new site.

It’s always best to have a copy of the SQL dump IMHO, even if you do elect to do the export/import. You can save some time by installing the WP Backup plugin which will export the SQL file to your hard drive, your server or even email a copy to an email address that you designate, and it will also do this on a scheduled basis. How cool is that?

For the most part, you did it the right way.

Typically whenever I transfer customers to our hosting I don’t only copy over their wp-content folder, I copy everything over (all their hosting files).

Then I transfer their database just as you described.

The reason for transferring all their files and folders over is because I want to completely copy and mirror what they had on the other host. The way you did it is fine, though.

As for the last part of your question: Also, what’s the difference between downloading the database from phpMyAdmin and using the “Export” tool from the Dashboard? The “Export” tool seems so much simpler.

    There’s a big difference.

The Import/Export is really only for importing and exporting a blog author’s posts, comments, etc. However, a database contains your entire blog’s settings, including usernames, passwords, plugin settings, your WordPress and Blog URLs, if different.

    Thanks for the responses!

    Hello,

I need some help. I have a wordpress.com blog. I just set up my own domain and a godaddy hosting with the wordpress application.

Now I need to move all of my content from my wordpress.com blog to the new, self-hosted WP application.

On godaddy that is done via myPHPadmin. The problem is that the only file you can import is a .csv file. But my exported wordpress.com file is of course and XML file.

I tried to convert the file from xml to csv using MS Excel but my MS Excel would not open the XML file.

Can someone please tell me how to do get my content from my wordpress.com blog to my new selfhosted wordpress blog?
